Metropolitan Library

The Metropolitan Library system is located in Oklahoma City. It is made up of 5 small libraries and 12 full-service libraries. The library is used by residents of Oklahoma City, suburbs around the city and those who live outside Oklahoma County. It has a borrowing agreement with McClain, Pottawatomie and Cleveland counties. Non-residents are also allowed to borrow materials by paying an annual fee.

Innovative programs are devised to serve residents. They include interesting programs for adults, teens and children, library set up in a nursing home and 'Book by Mail' service for those confined to their homes and the elderly. During the course of travel in Oklahoma City, the library is a good place to be familiarized local history.

The governing body comprises of a Metropolitan Library Commission with 27 members. Out of these, two seats are meant for the Mayor and chair of the Board of County, 11 members are appointed by other cities that come under the service area of the Library, 13 members are appointed by the Mayor and finally one seat is appointed by the Board of County Commissioners of Oklahoma County. Oklahoma City travel must include a visit to the library.

Over the years the library has come under fire for some controversies and censorship issues. In the Year 1997 the film 'The Tin Drum' caused a lot of hue a cry. A conservative group, that goes by the name of "Oklahomans for Children and Families", accused the library for harboring inappropriate material.

As a result the Oklahoma County District Judge Richard Freeman declared the movie to be 'obscene'. All materials pertaining to the film was withdrawn from the library.

In a similar manner, some books too caused controversies. As a result of which, in May 2005 a resolution was passed by the Oklahoma House to keep books that are not appropriate for children, confined to adult access. In November 2008 the commission ordered that books not meant for children, should be kept a minimum of 60 inches above the ground.
