Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma

Founded in the year 1963, the Lyric Theater is Oklahoma City's solo professional and year-round musical theater. Over the last 46 years, the Lyric Theater has produced many musicals. They have been both contemporary and classic and have featured both national Broadway stars and local talent.

Mature and edgier shows are performed on the 'second stage', whereas the Thelma Gaylord Performing Arts Theatre in the Civic Center Music Hall is the venue for contemporary and classic musicals.

The theater's summer season was moved here in 2002. It can host an audience of 50,000 people and has theater which is modern, classic and artistic, catering to the family audience. Show Notes, a new winter series came into being in the fall of 2001. These revolved around a central theme and were cabaret style shows. The winter of 2004 saw the emergence of edgy and mature shows that catered to the more adventurous and outgoing viewer. Staged Reading Series started in the fall of 2005. This gave an opportunity to composers and writers to see their work on stage.

They were amazed to see their music and words come alive. No sets were built, no costumes or props were used and movement was kept to the minimum. A feedback session after the reading gave the audience an opportunity to voice their opinions and express there likes and dislikes.

Oklahoma City ok travel will provide an opportunity to visit the Lyric Theater. The theater undertook renovation of the historic Plaza Theater. This has now become the venue for new plays and rare musicals. The seating is more intimate now with only 270 seats. The Theater is also an employment generator, providing 250 jobs each year.

Directors with national recognition, actors, technicians, artisans and designers from all over the state are employed by the theater. The Lyric Academy is an organization that imparts training in the field of theatre.
