Travel Oklahoma City with knowledge about its origin and history, so that you can better enjoy your visit to the place.
The city was first settled in April 22, 1889. It was known as the "unassigned lands", which implies that the area was unassigned to any tribes. The area was opened for settlement and was known as "The Land Run". The region was named Oklahoma City and the population in the place doubled in between the years 1890 and 1900.
There was a sudden influx of money in the city with the emergence of oil wells all over the place; which brought about growth of the city. After the Second World War, the city earned the name of being a major hub in the national Interstate Highway System.
With the oil wells drying up, the economy of the city also started dwindling. Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS) Plan was carried out by Mayor Ron Norrick in the area helped to improve the condition of the city making it what it is at present. Today the place has a population of 558,000 and is the largest city of Oklahoma.
A historically significant event in the city deserves mention. Timothy McVeigh drove a truck of explosives to downtown Oklahoma City's Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in April 19, 1995 and there was a massive explosion. 168 people were killed due to the explosion, of which 19 were children and over 680 people were injured. After the September 11 attack, this terrorist attack is known to be the largest in American history.
